You know that feeling when you rediscover a singer you absolutely adored but who for some reason has disappeared from your radar? We recently experienced that exhilaration when Canadian country pop superstar Shania Twain appeared in a sequin dress at Coachella in April and joined headliner Harry Styles for a duet of Man! I feel like a woman and You are always the only one. It’s not that we ever doubted our love for Twain, but we were so happy to remember how uplifting his music truly is.

It’s almost like the gods of Netflix are listening to our Spotify playlists, then, because a brand new documentary exploring the star’s rise to fame hits the streaming platform next week.

Featuring music videos, concerts and archive footage, plus new interviews centered around Twain’s storied country music career, Not just a girlnamed after a new song of the same name, will chart Twain’s inspirational rise to success with all its ups and downs.

Beginning with the story of Twain’s humble beginnings in Timmins, Ontario, where she grew up in poverty and was inspired by the story of Dolly Parton, the documentary chronicles the signing of her first record label in Nashville and meeting her future husband and rock producer Robert “Mutt” Lange before writing, recording and releasing his breakthrough album The woman in me.

The film, directed by Joss Crowley, also explores the singer’s separation from Lange in 2008 and her marriage to Frédéric Thiébaud three years later, her battle with Lyme disease which affected her vocal cords, and is working on her next sixth album through brand new interviews with Twain at home.

Other musical superstars such as Lionel Richie, Avril Lavigne, Kelsea Ballerini, Diplo, Taylor Swift and Orville Peck also make appearances in the documentary as they reflect on the star’s life and legacy.

“She was the first person to open that door and cross musical genres. She was that trailblazer,” Richie explains in the new trailer, while Peck says she “changed culture.”

The trailer also sees the five-time Grammy Award winner talk about her vocal cord issues.

“It was just as intense as losing my parents,” she says. “I thought I had lost my voice forever, I thought that was it.”

The documentary will be available to stream July 26, the same day Twain is set to digitally release a compilation album titled Not just a girl (the highlights).

“I’m finishing my album. It’s a really great feeling,” Twain says in the trailer. “And I think the fans are going to like it.”

The music icon, whose career sales exceed 100 million records worldwide, seems as excited for the documentary as we are.

“OMG I love this trailer!!” she tweeted alongside the preview. “It’s crazy to see my whole career in 90 seconds.”

Now excuse us while we pull out our halter tops.
