INXS hit celebrates 35 years with new immersive audio edition

INXS‘ revolutionary album, Kickis about to celebrate its 35th anniversary with an exclusive new immersive audio edition overseen by Giles Martin.

The legendary Aussie band had another reason to celebrate last week, INXS – The best was recognized for outstanding achievement on the ARIA Top 100 Albums where it successfully remained for an incredible 500 weeks in just under a decade. That’s more than any album in the current top 100, with seven of those weeks at No. 1.

“500 weeks on the Top 100 albums chart is an absolutely phenomenal achievement, even though you are one of the biggest and most iconic bands Australia has ever seen. On behalf of all of us at ARIA, I am delighted to congratulate INXS and once again thank them for their enormous contribution to the Australian recording industry,” said ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd.

In 2020, the anthemic collection of hits officially achieved “Diamond” status on the ARIA charts and was recognized for sales of over half a million units and crowned Australia’s best album of the decade.

Many of these hit songs featured on The best of the best can be accredited for their top-ranked 7-x Platinum album, Kick. To celebrate the album’s 35th anniversary this year, Kick received an exclusive remix by two-time Grammy Award-winning British-born music producer extraordinaire Giles Martin, who delivered his latest spatial audio masterpiece available now on Apple Music.

“Giles did a fantastic job! We were so used to hearing the stereo mix all these years that it was a shock at first to hear it remixed in Dolby Atmos. I noticed so much more detail right away, you hear all the other subtleties brought out in an immersive mix. The remixing process is very delicately balanced to showcase the incredible originals by Bob Clearmountain and Chris Thomas. Immersive mixing gives the listener a whole new audio experience that lets you hear the record (almost) as if you’re sitting among the band in the recording studio while it plays. Giles has taken this album to an exciting new level,” said Tim Farriss.

“When the record was first recorded 35 years ago in the 80s, there was a lot more outboard gear required that was specific to that era – outboard gear, etc. This gear is not no longer available, so I take my hat off to Giles, who was able to recreate the disc and process the sounds accurately with today’s technology. It looks like the original album but now, spread over a space 3D. It looks amazing,” said Kirk Pengilly.

“It was a privilege to work with my friends, the brilliant INXS group that I love. It was a collaborative effort to bring this album into an immersive format. The biggest difference with sound is that immersive audio surrounds you while stereo hits you in the face. Together we managed to bring out the rock and roll while delivering this incredible spatial audio experience,” adds Giles Martin.

In 2017, Kick became the second album worldwide to be remixed by Martin for a unique cinematic experience that featured new Dolby Atmos sound as part of Kick’s 30th anniversary celebrations. To date, Martin has worked with The BeatlesINXS and The rolling stones in spatial audio format. Now in 2022, Giles Martin continues to ensure INXS’ legacy is honored just like the late President of Petrol Records, Chris Murphy considered.

During their first collaboration in 2017, Chris Murphy spoke about the relationship between INXS and Martin: “Giles Martin’s track record speaks for itself. We must ensure that the incredible music and extraordinary story of INXS is heard and told to future generations and as such, we want the best eyes and ears to partner with us in all of our future innovative and exciting. Giles is a dear friend of the band and someone we can trust without a doubt to provide outstanding creative input and rare musical perspective.

“500 Weeks is an incredible honor and just shows appreciation for such an incredible album. Chris Murphy’s presence is always felt on all INXS projects, and we are proud to continue his work with passion,” said Andrew Daw, Executive Vice President, International Marketing at UMe, the global catalog company of Universal Music Group.

Originally formed in 1977, INXS’ career spans an extraordinary 45 years, during which they have sold over 60 million records worldwide, including #1 albums on four different continents. Delivering an avalanche of hits including “Need You Tonight”, “New Sensation”, “Never Tear Us Apart”, “Devil Inside” and “Mystify”, Kick sold over 20 million copies worldwide and made INXS one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Kick ATMOS Immersive Audio Edition is now available on Apple Music.
