David & the Citizens formed when the band’s singer and songwriter David Fridlund left Stockholm for Malmoe in 1999 with a couple of songs recorded on his four-track. Within weeks he had bagged a gig in Malmoe and called for some help to perform live. Karl-Jonas Winqvist, Jenny Wilson, Mikael Carlsson answered the call and an early constellation of the band was born. That year they played the Hultsfred Festival (sweden’s biggest festival) and the Emmaboda Festival. But Karl-Jonas and Jenny retraced David’s steps and left Malmoe for Stockholm leaving David again putting out the call for help, and through mutual friends, he met Conny Fridh and Alexander Madsen. This configuration played Popstad 2000 (a big yearly showcase festival in Sweden) in Malmoe, and other gigs. In spring 2000 David & the Citizens played twice in Stockholm and the band wanted to add a trumpet to their sound. Magnus Bjerkert was recruited for this purpose and the present set-up was complete.

In the summer of 2002, David & the Citizens played all major festivals in Sweden and the Roskilde festival in Denmark. Meanwhile, P3 (Sweden’s main CHR station) produced a documentary series about the band and followed them around during the entire festival. The documentary has been aired several times on both Swedish and Danish television. Another joint Scandinavian broadcasting project was the TV series “Stereo” where David & the Citizens and the Danish jazz singer Caecilie Norby covered each-other’s songs.

In the spring of 2003 the Band once again teamed up with producer Jens Lindgård (Franz Ferdinand, St. Etienne, The Mopeds) to make their second album.

The band were recently nominated for Best Pop Group at the 21st Swedish Grammys and they will be playing:

London, Barfly Camden on Friday May 28th with their label mates LAAKSO

Graycoated Morning is the lead track from the band's recent Scandinavian 7" single - copies of which will be available soon at www.oxfordmusic.net - and is taken from their recent album, " Until the Sadness is Gone".

The excellent double A-side of this MP3 release, Song Against Life, is taken from the 2002 album "For all Happy Endings".
