Five friends who get together in another friend's old gym, insult each other and play instrumental music. In their own words....
"Our first gig was in October 2004 in a pub in Haslemere where we still had a singer, played through a cobbled together excuse for a PA and were probably pretty shocking. Since then we've played various places such as Oxford, Guildford, London, Leeds, Brighton, Southampton. Notable events in our career (silly word as it implies we're making money) include early gigs up in Leeds with lots of friends joining us (on bongos, flute, vocals, extra guitars.); getting kicked out of a venue in Kingston for not bringing enough people; & breaking a guitar over someone's head in a venue in Bognor (pretty sure we won't be playing there again either). Getting played on resonancefm was cool too (cheers Sean O).
We've played our fair share of crap gigs with some pitiful bands and lost-the-plot promoters - possibly the most pointless being in some hole called Arkendale up North dressed as Medieval wenches (it was a Medieval-rock-battle-of-the-bands-curry-night or something), but a night called PopQuest (yeah, we should have known better) was an exercise in absurdity too.
More recently though we've played some great nights with some storming bands such as UpCDownC, The PirateShip Quintet, They Don't Sleep, Mt., From The Sky, & Kumiss which have been ace.
We started 2007 by getting in the studio. The tracks are being mixed at the moment - we'll shout about it when they're finished. In the meantime there's still our first 5-track EP which you can get by dropping us an email at fliesarespiesfromhell@hotmail.com."
These nice people said these nice things :
"Great piano led instrumentals from the moment they invade the stage to the moment I catch my breath afterwards." Ejector Seat.
"Creating slow-building brooding and uplifting soundscapes to an enthusiastic crowd. Flies put 100% into it tonight, working up a small maelstrom on their final number." Organ magazine (myspace.com/organ)
"Opening proceedings tonight are the stellar Flies are Spies From Hell. Within two songs they pretty much win the Creation of Atmosphere competition and have the already-jammed venue salivating with their impending doom-style narrative. . All things considered, you could not hope for a better opener, and one that with any luck will be headlining in the near future." (We are in fact, at the same venue on Feb 11th). www.oxfordbands.com
