Built To Spill
So there we were, sitting around the office of a Friday afternoon with a couple of bottles of cheap Sainsbury's Merlot, which is our little treat for putting in a hard week's work, and anyway, it's about as far as our profits will stretch, and we were musing on the last time a band actually made us shit ourselves with excitement. And then someone accidentally plucked the Scribble demo out of our giant box of stuff we haven't quite got round to listening to and rejecting yet. FIZZBANGZOOMKRUNNNNGGGG! it went and if nobody quite shat themselves because we're all grown up but not quite old and incontinent yet then quite a bit of cheap Merlot was spilt down newly laundered white T-shirts and even on the carpet. We signed them immediately but will be recouping the money for cleaning bills as soon as we've sold a few copies.
Scribble are from Derby. Except for original drummer Squib who's from Witney near Oxford, where we come from, and it was him who sent us the tape in the first place, so God bless him. Which brings us neatly to the single, `God Bless the Kids' (ha! you see, there's a point to all this). Originally pressed up as a limited edition of 300 on the band's own label and sold to their mates, `God Bless the Kids' is a speedfreaking lather of scuffed-up glam-punk jollity and hysterical vocals. It's already been compared to things as diverse as Supergrass, the Sweet, the Stooges, Sparks, Radiohead and Wire. All of which we'll take as compliments. It's a big fat brilliant ride full of stop-start type dynamics (a word we stole from `Making Music' magazine and don't fully understand) and noisy innocent punk pleasures. You'll love it, really you will. Just make sure you have sponge handy. For spillages.
